Confirm the connection details
Have the server address, approved username, and the connection method supplied with your service ready. Check which Windows edition is installed and whether your intended software and remote-session use are covered by the confirmed licensing.
Choose a supported client
Use an official, supported Remote Desktop client appropriate for your device and connection type. Microsoft’s current client guidance explains the available options. Do not assume a web-based desktop or multi-user RDS deployment is included with a basic server.
Verify the server before signing in
Enter the address provided for your service and review the server identity or certificate. Verify unexpected warnings or changed identity details through a trusted channel before proceeding. Never send account credentials through an untrusted tool.
Keep access restricted
Use strong, unique credentials and appropriate network restrictions. Discuss a VPN or Remote Desktop gateway where suitable. Limit clipboard, disk, and device redirection to what your task actually needs.
Work safely and troubleshoot clearly
Keep Windows and your applications updated, protect your files with independent backups, and sign out when appropriate. For connection problems, record the error, local device, time, and whether the issue affects other connections. Remove private information before sharing diagnostic details.

Check the supported client for your platform and connection type in Microsoft’s official documentation.
